In a situation that has left many feeling uncertain and anxious, a jockey from Berkshire, Kieran Shoemark, finds himself stranded in Dubai amidst a tense geopolitical crisis.
"There's a lot of uncertainty about when we'll be able to get home," Shoemark shared with BBC Radio Berkshire. He is one of a group of jockeys who had traveled to the United Arab Emirates for a race meeting, and now, two months later, they are still unable to return home due to the closure of airspace in the region.
But here's where it gets controversial: while the situation is undoubtedly serious, with Iran retaliating to US and Israeli attacks with missile strikes, the UAE authorities are doing their best to maintain a sense of calm and reassurance. Shoemark described seeing missiles and interceptors, hearing loud bangs, yet feeling relatively safe due to the incredible efforts of the local government.
And this is the part most people miss: the human stories behind these geopolitical events. Paul Page-Tickell, a lawyer who moved to Dubai last summer, described hearing a loud boom on Saturday, a sound that shook his villa and left him feeling scared. He is only 1.8 miles away from the Fairmont Hotel that was hit, yet he feels more worried about the impact on his family back home than his own safety.
"It's a surreal situation," Page-Tickell said. "You get used to noises here, but this was different. It rattled us, and it's hard not to think about what could have happened."
The closure of airspace has not only impacted the jockeys and their plans to return home but has also disrupted the lives of many expatriates living in Dubai. Page-Tickell's wife, for example, had to reschedule her job interview, which is now taking place online, and his nephew and his partner had to cancel their visit.
"The biggest impact is on our families back home," Page-Tickell added. "It's too early to reassess my future here, but I have no real plan to leave just yet."
So, while the situation in Dubai remains uncertain, with the potential for further escalation, the human stories of resilience and the desire to maintain a sense of normalcy amidst chaos are a powerful reminder of the strength of the human spirit.
