The Salte Library Bukchon in Seoul is a captivating fusion of fragrance, literature, and spatial storytelling, offering a unique retail experience. This innovative project by Niiiz Design Lab challenges traditional perfume retail by intertwining scent and written narratives. The library's interior design revolves around the concept of 'NOTE', blending the layered structure of perfume composition with the act of writing. This dual meaning is reflected in the spatial sequence, where visitors journey through five interconnected zones, each unfolding like a chapter in a narrative.
The exterior of the library maintains a restrained and minimalist expression, designed to pique visitor curiosity. A large front-facing window frames the main hall and reveals a central sculptural installation, creating a visual connection between the interior and the surrounding urban fabric of Bukchon. Inside, the library presents an immersive experience with an installation referencing salt and books, material metaphors for scent and language. A tunnel-like corridor guides visitors to the main hall, where handwritten impressions by invited writers accompany the fragrances, and visitors can leave their own written reflections.
The main display area is a transparent circular fixture inspired by an open book, showcasing approximately fifty fragrance-related products. This design encourages visitors to circulate and compare scents while reading literary descriptions. Additional areas include a service counter for international visitors and a curated reading zone, extending the fragrance experience beyond conventional retail. The library's spatial sequencing, material restraint, literary references, and sensory interaction position fragrance retail as an immersive architectural environment, connecting storytelling, memory, and contemporary Korean cultural production.
